SUMMARY:From Mudbound to Freshwater: An Intimate Conversation About Film Scoring with dream hampton and Tamar-kali
DESCRIPTION:From Mudbound to Freshwater: An Intimate Conversation About Film Scoring with dream hampton and Tamar-kali\nPresented by The Center for Black Visual Culture and Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music\, join us for From Mudbound to Freshwater: An Intimate Conversation About Film Scoring with dream hampton and Tamar-kali. This special evening pairs two visionary artists for an illuminating conversation on the film scoring process and the role of sound in shaping stories. From orchestras and found sounds\, to Oscar-nominated features and intimate shorts\, they will reflect on the intersections of film\, music\, and memory\, how moments of success and failure shape an artist’s path\, and why some of the most powerful scores begin with the sounds of everyday life. This program invites us to listen more closely to sound\, cinema\, and each other. This event is co-sponsored by The Hemispheric Institute at New York University. \nCBVC Fall Artist-Scholar in Residence and award-winning filmmaker dream hampton and celebrated composer Tamar-kali join for an illuminating conversation on the film scoring process and the role of sound in shaping stories. \n\n\ndream hampton is an award-winning filmmaker and writer from Detroit. For three decades her essays and cultural criticism helped shape a generation. Her most recent works include the award winning short film “Freshwater” (NYT OpDocs/PBS\, 2023) and “Ladies First” (Netflix\, 2023). In 2019 she was showrunner and Executive Producer of the Emmy nominated docuseries\, “Surviving R. Kelly” (Netflix)\, which broke ratings records and earned her a Peabody Award. That year she was named one of TIME 100’s most influential people in the world. \nTamar-kali is a vocalist\, performer\, award winning composer and Oscar shortlisted composer of Oscar nominated and Emmy award winning films. Whether her alt-rock power quintet or her all femme chamber ensemble\, as a performer\, she speaks her lyrical truth with a supreme passion and a voice that will shake your foundation and shatter your expectations with its soulful intensity. Her debut original score for Dee Rees’ Oscar-nominated “Mudbound” received the World Soundtrack Academy’s 2018 Discovery of the Year Award and was classified by Indiewire as one of the 25 Best Film Scores of the 21st Century. \n\n\nRSVP \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nDate:  October 28\, 2025 \nTime:  7:00pm to 8:30pm \nLocation: Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music\, Garage370 Jay St. Brooklyn\, New York\, 11201
