SUMMARY:Black Curators Matter
DESCRIPTION:Black Curators Matter\nA Book Talk & Signing with Kellie Jones and Deborah Willis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Center for Black Visual Culture welcomes Dr. Kellie Jones for a talk and signing of she and Tumelo Mosaka’s publication\, Black Curators Matter. Dr. Jones will be joined in conversation by CBVC Founding Director Dr. Deborah Willis as they reexamine the curatorial field and discuss the transformative strategies that reshaped American art museums toward greater inclusivity and experimentation. \nThe relationship between Black Americans and U.S. art museums has historically been fraught and hard-won. In the late 1960s\, the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition and other groups organized protests at major art museums\, calling for the inclusion of Black artists and curators. Such advocacy led to acquisitions and exhibitions by Black artists at important institutions and spurred the establishment of museums and cultural organizations promoting Black art and culture. Today\, Black curators hold significant positions at institutions nationwide. Black Curators Matter illuminates this critical history by spotlighting figures who have transformed the art world since the 1970s. \nThis book presents illuminating conversations between six pioneering curators—Lowery Stokes Sims\, Deborah Willis\, Richard J. Powell\, Kellie Jones\, Thelma Golden\, and Franklin Sirmans—and a new generation of professionals\, including Ashley James\, Kalia Brooks\, Aaron Bryant\, Thomas Jean Lax\, Rujeko Hockley\, and LeRonn P. Brooks. Capturing the voices and experiences of Black curators\, these discussions highlight their achievements and provide guidance for future generations aiming to diversify and enrich the cultural landscape.  \n\n\nKellie Jones\, Ph.D. is a writer\, image activist\, and cultural critic who has shaped Black beauty and media culture for over three decades. As VIBE magazine’s founding fashion director\, she worked alongside icons including Diana Ross\, Prince\, and Maya Angelou\, helping define the visual language of Black music and style journalism. She continues to work at the intersection of media\, identity\, and activism\, using her platform to advocate for the representation and dignity of Black women. \nDeborah Willis\, Ph.D.  is Program Director of NYU’s Center for Black Visual Culture and Institute of African American Affairs\, an award-winning cultural critic\, feminist author\, Grammy-nominated songwriter\, and a pioneering hip-hop journalist. She coined the term “hip-hop feminism” in 1999 with the publication of her groundbreaking book When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost\, now taught in college classrooms across the country. Regarded internationally as an expert on hip-hop\, the Caribbean\, and gender\, she is also the author of She Begat This: 20 Years of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and has appeared on HBO Max\, Netflix\, MTV\, BET\, CNN\, and MSNBC\, among others. \n\nRSVP \nDates:  February 2\, 2027 \nTime:  6:00 – 8:00 pm \nLocation: 20 Cooper Square 3rd Floor Lobby\, New York\, NY\, 10003 \n
