Beuford Smith

1941 – 2025.

Beuford Smith, was a prominent member of the Kamoinge Workshop, a collective that nurtured Black photographers at a time when they were marginalized by the mainstream.

A socially conscious photographer, Smith created empathetic, abstract and sometimes shadow-filled images of life in Black communities in New York City, including jazz musicians at work and the aftermath of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
