Harlem Roses: African Seafarers of the Harlem Renaissance

NYU Steinhardt.

Harlem Roses examines the presence of Africa’s diasporas during Harlem’s Renaissance, shaped by the Great Migration, the peripatetic movement of Black seafarers through colonial cities, and a growing air of pan-Africanism. Tracing the migration of Somali seafarers, this event will focus on the early presence of African Muslims in Harlem’s Le Petit Senegal neighborhood.

It will include a conversation with guests and some light snacks and beverages. Limited seating available.
