We honor pioneer Judith Jamison Judith Jamison. A graceful, long-limbed dancer who rose to international stardom in the 1970s, succeeded Alvin Ailey as the leader of his namesake troupe and helped sustain the company as a barrier-breaking force in modern dance.

“Jamison stands out for the subtlety with which she shapes dance movement, for the intensity and lavishness of her performing,” dance critic and choreographer Deborah Jowitt wrote in 1976, profiling Ms. Jamison for the New York Times. “She gives the impression of total commitment — that not one jot of her considerable emotional, intellectual, or physical power is being withheld from any moment of dancing.”
